 Property Description

One of the most unique homes in the Historical District of Georgetown has only been a residence for a mere 100 years. Probably built in the mid 1800’s due to pegged and hand hewn beams found in the attic. In fact a scuttle is in the ceiling so anyone interested can easily see. The location is directly behind the Winyah Indigo Society Hall. The society itself was formed as a Convivial Club in 1740 and received its’ Royal Charter in 1758. One of the many acts of charity was the establishment of a free school. 121 Cannon St. was built behind the Society Hall as the one room (24x24) school annex to the original school. Approximately 1900, a center hall and the second room were added across the front. The front door was moved to the center hall which is the entrance today, but the initial door still exists. The rooms were heated by pot-bellied stoves and 2 small structures in the backyard were marked “Girls” and “Boys” (no longer exist). The school annex was purchased and became a home around 1915

 About Historic District of Georgetown

Few other areas in America contain more history or charm than Georgetown, South Carolina. From its earliest beginnings as the probable site of the first European settlement in North America in 1526, to its present status as a vibrant and gracious city of 9,000, Georgetown has long been known for its warm hospitality and Southern charm. The third oldest city in South Carolina, following Charleston and Beaufort, Georgetown was founded in 1729 and became an official port of entry in 1732. Prior to this, all foreign exports and imports had to pass through Charleston. Duties and the added freight had to be paid there. With the designation of Georgetown as a port of entry, the area's merchants and planters could deal directly with all ports, bypassing Charleston.

 About Georgetown

Mere miles and whole worlds from amusement parks, high-rises, theatres, and sprawling shopping malls, the historic city of Georgetown rises in antebellum grace. Established in 1732, Georgetown is South Carolina's third oldest city. The oak-lined avenues of this "little Charleston" city boast group tour treasures for even the most discriminating travelers. The riverfront is alive with activity and history. Dining, shopping, and scenery reign supreme. Harborwalk is a charming waterfront boardwalk between two of Georgetown's most historically significant buildings, the Kaminski House (c. 1760) and the Rice Museum (originally the Old Market Building, c. 1842). Overlooking the Sampit River Harbor, the boardwalk is lined with restaurants, galleries, antique shops, and specialty stores. Shoppers have more than 30 specialty shops to browse. A potpourri of art galleries and charming shops with Lowcountry names offer a treasure trove of books, clothes, fine art, jewelry, crafts, cards, and antiques. There are several ways to see the rest of Georgetown. Historic attractions such as the Kaminski House and the Rice Museum complement a staggering concentration of 50-plus antebellum mansions, a few of which are operated as charming bed and breakfast inns. Guided or self-guided historical tours are readily available.
